Taking His Name

The goal of this Sunday School lesson is to expand the kids understanding of all the implications of this simple Sunday School Lesson Plancommandment. The meaning of this command is to not make an oath sealed with God’s name and then not keep your promise. But, by expanding on the meaning of the word vain we see that if we do something in vain it can mean that we did something for nothing. The goal is to help them understand that if they are going to call themselves Christians (followers of Christ, [His name]) they ought to be Christians. That is, letting their faith have an impact on the way they live their lives.
Dances With Wolves
This is a one page Sunday school lesson plan with leaders guide. No preparation necessary. However, since it is a short lesson plan a game or ice-breaker as group building activities. Remember, too: Always pepper the back of a one page Sunday school lesson with pictures of the last group activity.

I have used the movie Dances with Wolves as an illustration for our names being part of our identity.

Book about Fake Christianity

Fake Christianity
By C. B. Matthews

Fake Christianity is a challenging and inspiring book for any Christian. In the center of cultural decay, blurred ethics, and a church that lacks the knowledge of God, this book shines out like a beacon.

If you want to learn how a genuine Christian should think, feel, act, and believe in the world today, this book is for you.

Possessed by “The” Spirit:

The goal of this lesson is to give kids a different perspective on what is means to be a Christian. Instead of the usual “WhatSunday School Lesson Plan for teens can God do for me?” approach, this lesson focuses on what it means to be a possession of Christ and indwelt by the Holy Spirit. This lesson may cause some kids to re-examine their commitment to Christ while others might realize for the first time that this facet of commitment to Christ needs to be added to their faith. This is a one page lesson plan with a pre-lesson activity* and with leaders guide. I’ve left plenty of time to pursue the following suggestion:

At the completion of this lesson a clear statement of the Gospel message is needed with an opportunity to accept it. My suggestion is to use The Four Spiritual Laws, developed by Campus Crusade for Christ. You can down load it from this web link: http://www.everystudent.com/features/gettingconnected.html

*Pre-lesson activity: I show a clip from the original Star Trek series where Captain Kirk gets inhabited by an alien. That seemed to be a weekly occurrence. Sometimes I will wear my Star Trek uniform. The kids get a good laugh but it sparks the conversation about being “possessed” or having one’s personality taken over by a spirit. They think about what it really means to have been purchased by God and now they are owned. Here is a link to the episode if for some reason you don’t already own it.

Alive In The Spirit

Alive in the Spirit: Experiencing the Presence and Power of God
By A.W. Tozer / Bethany House

How can we experience the Holy Spirit in everyday life? What’s the difference between possessing and being filled by the Spirit? Are spiritual gifts necessary? Excerpted from Tozer’s sermons, this never-before-published collection shows how to cultivate the indwelling power of God so that we can be transformed into the people he’s calling us to be.

Spiritual Gifts or Super Powers:

The goal of this lesson is to give the kids an accurate overview of spiritual gifts and how the Holy Spirit uses them today. ThisSpiritual Gifts or Super Powers is a two page lesson plan with teachers guide. You should order the Spiritual Gifts Questionnaire to go along with the teaching.

This lesson was born from my disappointment with churches that tend to emphasize the mystical gifts of healing, speaking in tongues, miracles in an effort to better their lives or bring a sense of spiritual excitement to a congregation where none exists. It’s a shame that people don’t think they have any spiritual gifts because they assume that’s reserved for the flashy showmen on stage.

Most kids don’t believe that they have any spiritual gifts. Boy, are they shocked when they find out they already do. You can see their brains light up with possibilities of serving God and their church with their special gifts.

It’s not too early to give the spiritual questionnaire shown below to the kids.

Why kids want superpowers

Here is a YouTube® clip from the movie Spiderman where Peter Parker discovers his super powers. It is a great illustration of kids longing to be able to deal with their environment to create a more positive existence for themselves.

Why adults wish spiritual gifts were super powers:

Disappointment with God
As the American dream (work hard and you can become wealthy) fails them adults grasp at their dreams from childhood. They hope spiritual gifts will give them super mystical ways to deal with the crushing disappointment of their environment. Disappointed Christians are easy prey to those offering mystical healing and prosperity in the name of Jesus.

Many grownups are disillusioned with God because of false gospels. You will be ministering to them too. In Disappointment with God, Philip Yancey answers the silent questions that many of ask: Why does God seem so distant? Why, if God cares for us, do bad things happen? He answers these questions with clarity, richness, and biblical assurance, taking us beyond disillusionment to deeper faith, and a certitude of God’s love.

You will come up against these questions. Make sure you have Biblical answers and resources to help those who are struggling.
